Privacy Policy

Published June 2024. This policy was created using WordPress services and modified to reflect the services in use.

Who I Am

This website, jahartig.com, is a one-woman show. I run it as I prefer to interact with other websites–without annoying third-party ads, no selling of your information, no deluge of emails in your inbox, and no lawyer talk to wade through for pages.

My level of technical expertise is enough to create this personalized version of a Divi template on WordPress and the images used on it. I will not collect or sell your personal data outside of what you provide. However, some of the services and software I use may collect information as noted below.

Comments

At this time, I’ve disabled all comments on the website for the following reasons:

  1. Even with software to reduce spam, the vast majority of comments have nothing to do with the posts. Controlling this problem requires more time than I’m willing to commit.
  2. Newsletter subscribers typically email me back directly with questions and comments. I enjoy this personal form of connection. Over time, I will incorporate these comments by editing and amending the posts.

If this feature is turned on in the future, when visitors leave comments on the site I will collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Cookies

I don’t have the expertise to identify what cookies may be used within WordPress, Google, Divi, and other software services used to access, allow the site to function, and provide basic analytics.

I can attest that no additional or advertising cookies have been added or activated by me.

If you leave a comment on my site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies through a third-party app. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. As I understand it, most of these cookies last for one year.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who I share your data with

The information you provide to sign up for my newsletter is directly saved and used in my account with an email delivery service. Otherwise, I don’t directly share your data.

How long I retain your data

If I enable comments in the future and you leave one, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

What rights you have over your data

You can request to be removed from the newsletter distribution by clicking on the unsubscribe link at the email’s bottom.

I retain a list of all subscribers and may send you a notice prior to a book launch or other event. If you don’t wish to receive this, you may permanently remove your name from my records by unsubscribing from these emails or by contacting me directly at author (at) juliehartig.com.

Deletion of information does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where your data is sent

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Information provided by you when you sign up for the newsletter is stored in the email distribution platform’s system. I use Aweber for this service.
